Why Villar is up and Noynoy is down

As the presidential race enters its last laps, and poll surveys notwithstanding, I maintain that it’s going to be a five-way fight among the candidates: Senators Manuel Villar and Benigno Aquino III, former President Joseph Estrada, former Defense Secretary Gilbert Teodoro and Senator Richard Gordon.

I’ve been a journalist for over half a century. I know that in our kind of politics, one day makes a lot of difference. After all, politics is the art of the possible. There are just too many imponderables.

Villar denies being Arroyo’s ’secret candidate’

Nationalista Party standard bearer Senator Manuel Villar Jr. on Saturday denied that he was the “secret candidate” of the administration and that he met with First Gentleman Jose Miguel Arroyo at the house of Mike Defensor on January 7, as contained in several text messages now circulating among the public.

“Hindi ko pa nakikita si First Gentleman at ang Presidente, hindi pa kami nag-uusap since na ako ay natanggal sa pagkapangulo ng Senado,” Villar told reporters before his speech at the national convention of Philippine Guardians Brotherhood Inc (PGBI) held at the Tarlac State University.

SCTex was Gloria’s gift to Aquinos

The Tarlac portion of the Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway (SCTex) was one of President Arroyo’s ways of expressing her gratitude to the Cojuangco-Aquinos who helped her grab power unconstitutionally from then sitting President Joseph Estrada in 2001.

This was disclosed by Tribune sources yesterday.

Rep. Crispin “Boying” Remulla distributed copies of a Bases Conversion Development Authority (BCDA) check for P50 million, representing a government downpayment for the overpriced road right of way (RoW) for the raw land in Hacienda Luisita, the property of the Aquino-Cojuangco clan in Tarlac.

Legal Counsel Letter refuting Monsod’s article on Philippine Inquirer

We wish to respectfully convey our comments on your article entitled “Get Real: Manny Villar blameless?” published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer on 30 January 2010.

First. It is imperative to point out the differences between the Manila Cavite Toll Expressway Project (MCTEP) and the C5 Road Extension Project (C5 Road Extension).

Trending Down

What we’re seeing in the opinion surveys, with a little over three months left before the elections, now appears to have the unmistakable signs of a trend. And unless Noynoy Aquino wakes up in time and does something about it, the trend may become irreversible.

Aquino’s Liberal Party has attempted to put a positive spin on the results of the latest Social Weather Stations/Businessworld survey, which shows the once-humongous lead of its standard-bearer over his closest pursuer, Senator Manny Villar, whittled down to a mere seven percentage points. According to an LP news release, the seven-percent difference between the top two candidates “would [still] amount to about 3 million votes if all 49 million Filipinos vote on May 10.”

Villar gains ground versus Aquino

LIBERAL PARTY standard-bearer Benigno Simeon “Noynoy” C. Aquino III remains the top pick among the 10 presidential aspirants green-lighted by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) but the Nationalista Party’s (NP) Sen. Manuel “Manny” B. Villar appears to be fast catching up.

With the campaign period yet to officially start, a new BusinessWorld-Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey found 42% of respondents saying they would vote for Mr. Aquino, four points down from the 46% who said so in an early December poll that was also commissioned by this newspaper.

C – 5 sound and fury: Is Monsod painting the full picture?

Posted on | February 2, 2010 | 1 Comment

Professor Solita Collas Monsod´s analysis of C – 5 attempts to inject “facts” into the sound and fury, that passes for parliamentary debate. While laudable, her efforts risk losing sight of the first principles in economics. By framing the debate too narrowly, we learn half the story. Unfortunately, it is the half that proves inaccurate.

For this reason, I offer contrasting views that draw different conclusions, proving Senator Manny Villar´s innocence.

The controversy on C – 5 precisely arose because Villar´s detractors a priori have judged him guilty. To build their case, they selectively use what passes as data that fit their arguments, while ignoring those that contradict their personal agenda. Hence “half-truths” not only mislead, they inflict serious injustice on the aggrieved parties.

SPEECH OF SENATOR MANNY VILLAR ON C5 CONTROVERSY

Mr. President: I stand before the Senate and the People of the Philippines in defense of my name, my honor, and dignity against my accusers in the so-called C5 controversy. To set the records straight and to prove to the Senator who called me coward na hindi ako duwag.

The Truth About the C5 Controversy
