Conrado de Quiros on Noynoy and the Luisita Massacre

The following is a piece written by Inquirer columnist Conrado de Quiros, which appeared on November 22, 2004 in the Inquirer, six days after the Luisita Massacre. (de Quiros is now a staunch supporter of Aquino’s presidential bid)

No one gets left behind in war vs poverty – Villar

s As soldiers often say in the heat of battle, Nacionalista Party (NP) standard-bearer Manny Villar vowed to “leave no one behind” in his bid to stamp out poverty in the country.

“The next president must make sure that economic growth redounds to the benefit of the poor. I believe that any growth must be inclusive, that no one is left behind when the economy improves,” Villar said.

The NP standard-bearer said the findings of three international development agencies – the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), and the UN Development Program (UNDP) – on the poverty problem in the Philippines should be a wake-up call for the national leadership.

Win or Lose, Villar is Prepared

Sen. Manuel B. Villar Jr. is perceived and is regarded as the most prepared, logistics and otherwise, compared to his rivals in the coming May 10 presidential elections. But is that his fault?

As early as two years ago, Villar declared his intentions to aspire for the highest office of the land as president of his own Nacionalista Party (NP). And for doing so, Villar was subsequently, unceremoniously ousted as Senate president. Stripped of official duties as Senate presiding chief, Villar, thus, got all the opportunities and time to start early his preparations for the presidential elections from that time on.

Noynoy, my petulant candidate friend, by Tony Lopez

Noynoy Aquino, the frontrunner presidential candidate, has become petulant.

On February 16, Tuesday afternoon, I served as moderator (no talent fee) of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) forum with six presidential candidates—Sen. Benigno “Noynoy” Aquino 3rd, former President Joseph Estrada, Senator Richard Gordon, former Defense Secretary Gilberto Teodoro, Bro. Eddie Villanuev, and Senator Manny Villar Jr. The forum consisted of four rounds—a five-minute presentation by each of the candidates, two rounds of questions, and a two-minute summation by each candidate. The order of speaking in the first round was drawn by lot an hour before the show. Gibo Teodoro picked No. 1; so he was the first to speak. Villar was No. 2, Aquino No.3, Estrada No. 4, Gordon No. 5, and Villanueva No. 6. I called on Teodoro without giving an introduction about him.

The Candidates: Villar

The most hurtful words hurled against her father, according to Camille Villar, are magnanakaw (thief) and coward.

Camille, the slim, 25-year-old corporate communications chief of the family-owned real estate company Vista Land, is obviously daddy’s girl. The only daughter of Sen. Manuel Villar Jr. and Las Piñas Rep. Cynthia Aguilar Villar, Camille accompanied her dad to The STAR office the other day for the launch of the newspaper’s series on presidential candidates. Cynthia Villar, who says Filipinos prefer low-key first ladies, was not with her husband.

The Vote 2010: So you want to be president? (Manny Villar)

MANILA, Philippines – To help voters make an informed choice in May, The Philippine STAR has started a series of interviews, in no particular order, with candidates for president.

Meetings are hosted by The STAR in the newspaper’s office, with the editorial staff asking the candidates questions on a wide range of issues.

The answers, recorded on tape and in video, portions of which can be viewed online in philstar.com, can later be used as references for campaign promises met or unfulfilled, goals achieved or changed.

Manny Villar jingle – Japanese version

Waaah! Mom, they’re picking on me!!!Waaah….I miss Jamboy!!!

Goodness, if i weren’t there, I wouldn’t have believed it. Noynoy getting peeved with Tony Lopez who was moderating at the PCCI Presidentiable Forum last Tuesday.

Caught unaware, Tony dished the question in the 3rd round and asked Noynoy to answer first. (In the previous round, Villar had to answer first) I cannot remember now what the question was, but very likely it was one that was not anticipated by Noynoy’s yellow team who diligently gives Noy a drill and a brief (read: codigo) before every forum or debate. Not able to hide his surprise, this son of illustrious parents pointedly cited that he didn’t know the sequence (of answering) was reversed. When Tony L retorted that every presidentiable should be ready for surprise, the lawmaker from Tarlac (who failed to file enough bills, much less have any enacted into law) quipped that the Moderator is biased! No sooner did Noynoy express his sentiment that he wished there was a friendlier, more unbiased Moderator.
